Coorparoo Enrichment and Extension in Mathematics (CMEE)

This afternoon 30 students have been invited to participate in our inaugural Coorparoo Enrichment and Extension in Mathematics (CMEE) program. The CMEE program is for students who have achieved exceptional results and have a demonstrated aptitude and interest in mathematics.

Students will work collaboratively with Mr Windsor to further develop their capacity to solve problems strategically. Time will be spent deeply analysing a full range of increasingly sophisticated problems, strategies and concepts. The aim of the CMEE program is to facilitate and develop important mathematical skills in a supportive and collaborative environment.

As part of the program, students will have an exciting opportunity to work with a guest presenter each month. In Term 2, our guest presenters include George Booker (Griffith University), Dr Rebecca Seah (RMIT) and Professor Chris Tisdell (UNSW). These three presenters are internationally recognised experts in their respective fields. Each guest presenter will work the CMEE students to develop a deeper understanding of specific mathematical concepts. Our “guest presenter days” are a wonderful opportunity for students to see first-hand how experts think and work mathematically.

Part of the CMEE program will involve competing against other schools and students. Participating in mathematical competitions can play an important part in developing students’ mathematical knowledge and reasoning. The competitions also provide feedback to help identify the aspects of a participants understanding of mathematics, which requires improvement. Furthermore, competitions provide an encouraging environment in which students compete, excel and are recognised for their abilities in mathematics. For this reason, students participating in the CMEE program will be participating in at least three mathematics competitions. Our school is funding our CMEE team to participate in all competitions.

Participating in this program is a wonderful opportunity for participants to work with likeminded students in a supportive environment. Participants will meet every Monday at 11:45am in our new STEAM Centre.
