Football’s capacity to produce unbridled joy is alive well at Coorparoo State School. In front 300 cheering and parochial spectators Turner House came from behind to win the inaugural Wolff Park Football Tournament Grand Final.
In an epic Grand Final, Turner and Melba played a hugely entertaining match. Both teams played swashbuckling football with Melba’s, Joe N (4P) scoring the opening goal. Turner, encouraged by the House Captains and their vocal supporters reacted almost immediately with Max T (3G) producing the goods and calmly slotting away an equalising goal shortly before half-time.
For much of the second half, it was Melba’s goalkeeper Brodie H (4J) and their defenders that provided an almost impenetrable defensive wall. Melba showed immense character to keep Turner at bay. With only 10 minutes remaining in the match, Hudson S (3V) received the ball on the edge of the penalty box and calmly slotted the ball past Melba’s goalkeeper.
The inevitable response from Melba came as Mahi M (4L) dribbled past three players only to be denied by Mahir P (4H) who deftly turned Mahi’s shot around the corner of the goalpost. A frenzied whirlpool of energy ensured after the subsequent corner with the ball striking a Melba player’s hand. From the resulting freekick Joe N passed to Angus T (4F) who struck a wonderful scoring shot from all of 25 metres, ensuring an enthralling and energetic final five minutes.
Then double wow! Turner responded immediately with Hudson S (3V) finding the net for a second time. Melba had run themselves into ground and were unable to stop Thomas H’s (4F) final scoring shot and victory for Turner House. The final score - Turner four, Melba two.
This was a terrific match for the immediate players, the spectators and all the students who participated in the Wolff Park Football tournament. From the outset, the tournament celebrated and exemplified comradery, kindness and resilience among our students. Today’s game was wonderful, but the tournament overall was exceptional. Congratulations to all our Year 3 and Year 4 students who participated.
