In memory of Gavin Finlay

In memory of Gavin Finlay, who enlisted in Machine Gun Company 12 of the Australian Army on the 6 May 1916.

Gavin Finlay enrolled at Coorparoo State School on the 19 August 1901. His family home was on Withington Street, East Brisbane. His brother John Finlay who also attended Coorparoo State School also enlisted in the Australian Army in 1916.

Gavin departed for Europe on board HMAT Port Lincoln on 20 October 1916 arriving on the Western Front in May 1917.

Gavin's active service form state that he was killed in action in Passchendale, Belgium on the 12 October 1917. He was 25 years old.

Gavin's body was not recovered and has no known grave.

Gavin is remembered with honour at the Menin Gate in Belgium.

The gate was named as it was a gateway under which hundreds of thousands of soldiers marched on their way to the battlefields. Inside the arch are inscribed the names of 56 000 men including 6 178 Australians who served in the campaign in Belgium, and who have no known grave.

Gavin Finlay's name is included on panel 131 at the Australian War Memorial's Roll of Honour and here at CSS for ever more.
