Who are our houses named after?

MELBA

Dame Nellie Melba (1861–1931)

Dame Nellie Melba was one of the world’s most famous opera singers. Born in Melbourne, she loved music from a young age. Melba travelled all over the world, singing in big cities like London and Paris. She became known for her beautiful voice and amazing performances. People loved her so much that she was made a Dame by the Queen! Melba was a true Australian star, and even a type of peach was named after her! She worked hard to make Australia proud and is remembered as one of the greatest singers in history.

WENTWORTH

William Wentworth (1790–1872)

William Wentworth was a famous Australian explorer, writer, and politician. He was born in England but came to Australia as a young boy. Wentworth helped discover new land and explore parts of Australia that hadn’t been mapped before. He also played a big role in fighting for Australian people to have more say in their government. He worked hard to make sure Australia became a great country for everyone. Wentworth’s courage and ideas helped shape the history of Australia.

TURNER

Ethel Turner (1872–1958)

Ethel Turner was an Australian writer best known for her book Seven Little Australians. She was born in Sydney and loved writing stories about children and families. Her most famous book tells the adventures of a lively group of kids, showing what life was like in Australia during her time. Ethel wrote many books, poems, and short stories. Her works are still loved by readers today, and she’s remembered as one of Australia's best authors.

Did you know…

Up until the late 1930s there was in fact a 4th House. It was the Purple house and it was named BARTON.

Edmund Barton (1849–1920)

Edmund Barton was one of Australia’s first Prime Ministers. Born in Sydney, he worked as a lawyer and became passionate about making Australia a united country. Barton helped create the Australian Constitution, which turned the separate colonies into one nation. He became the first Prime Minister of Australia in 1901 when the country officially became a federation. Barton worked hard to make Australia a fair and peaceful place for all. He is remembered as a key leader in Australia’s history and for his role in shaping the country we know today.

Our School Mascots
In 2024 a school wide competition and vote was held to create new house mascots and names. After a lengthy process the new house mascots and names were unveiled:The Wentworth Wallabies, The Turner Taipans and The Melba Manta Rays.
