Dear Coorparoo families, community and staff,

Today, we want to address something that weighs heavily on our hearts: the importance of safeguarding our children's mental health, particularly in the context of their online behaviours.

As we all know, the digital world is woven into the fabric of our children's lives, and while it offers incredible opportunities for learning and connection, it also presents significant challenges that we cannot ignore.

Personal experiences have highlighted a worrying trend: the rising impact of online interactions on our young people's mental wellbeing. It is crucial for us, as a school community, to work together to ensure our children are not only safe online but also equipped to navigate the complexities of digital life with resilience and empathy.

The consequences of online actions can be devastating, not just for the individual involved but for others too. A moment's thoughtlessness can lead to hurtful situations that linger long after the screens are turned off. As parents and educators, we have a shared responsibility to guide our children in understanding the weight of their words and actions online. It is imperative that we foster an environment where respect and kindness are at the forefront of all interactions.

At our school, we are committed to embedding mental health support throughout every aspect of our daily routines. Our approach is holistic: it acknowledges that a child's mental wellbeing is influenced by a myriad of factors, including their academic pressures, personal relationships, and indeed, their experiences online. We strive to create an environment where wellbeing is prioritised alongside academic achievement.

This includes initiatives such as our daily check ins with our students, encouraging open dialogue about their feelings and experiences. Small, consistent actions like this can lead to significant improvements in the relationships students have with each other and with staff. However, we cannot do this alone. We need your support at home to reinforce these values.

Please take time to discuss online activities with your children. Encourage them to think critically about their interactions and to be mindful of the impact their words can have on others. Engaging in conversations about digital literacy, privacy, and empathy can empower our young ones to make thoughtful choices.

We urge you to consider setting boundaries around screen time and to be proactive in understanding the platforms your children are using.

Your vigilance should extend beyond merely protecting children from harm to actively engaging with their online interactions, setting boundaries, and ensuring they understand the real-world consequences of their actions—whether they are victims or perpetrators.

By fostering an open dialogue, we can collectively build a safer online environment for our children.

As we navigate the challenges of the digital age, we have to prioritise our children's mental health. By working collaboratively—educators, parents, and students alike—we can create a nurturing environment that values empathy, respect, and understanding. Together, we can equip our children to face the world with resilience and compassion.

Thank you for your continued support in this vital journey.

Warm regards,

CSS Leadership Team
